david coverversion: leadbelly vs. mac wiseman

leadbelly is one popular man, being covered by ry cooder, the grateful dead, johnny cash, nirvana, gene autry, the beach boys, led zeppelin, tom waits, british sea power, rod stewart, nick cave and the bad seeds, the white stripes, mark lanegan, the fall, smog, ccr, the animals, abba, pete seeger, and mac wiseman. granted leadbelly didn't write 'where did you sleep last night?' or 'in the pines' or 'black girl', but it was his rendition that many people heard and copied. people such as bluegrass cult figure mac wiseman. mac started his musical career with as the guitarist for molly o'day, a country singer, but was recruited for the foggy mountain boys, when flatt & scruggs separated from bill monroe's group. also posted is one of my favorite bluegrass songs, 'jimmy brown, the newsboy'.

leadbelly - where did you sleep last night?
mac wiseman - in the pines

mac wiseman - jimmy brown, the newsboy
